Columbia, MO (Sports Network) - J.T. Tiller tallied a career-high 20 points, leading the Missouri Tigers to a 77-74 upset of 22nd-ranked Kansas State in a Big 12 matchup that went down to the wire.
Leo Lyons returned to the lineup and notched 13 points off the bench for the Tigers (13-9, 3-4 Big 12), who have won two of their last three and will get another chance at a ranked team on Monday with a visit to Kansas. Missouri picked up its second home win against a Top-25 foe, having already downed Texas, 97-84, on January 12. Keon Lawrence added 11 points in the winning effort Saturday, helping Mizzou improve to 11-2 as the host.
Marshall Brown also suited up again for the Tigers, finishing with two points. Brown and Lyons, along with Jason Horton and Darryl Butterfield, were suspended for last Wednesday's 66-62 loss to Nebraska by head coach Mike Anderson. The suspensions came in the wake of Stefhon Hannah's altercation outside a Columbia nightclub, which left him with a fractured jaw. Hannah, the Tigers' top scorer at 14.7 points per game, is expected to be sidelined for up to six weeks. Horton and Butterfield remain suspended.
Michael Beasley scored 17 points while also hauling in 10 rebounds for Kansas State (15-5, 5-1), which had a six-game winning streak stopped. Blake Young contributed 14 points, and Dominique Sutton and Bill Walker chipped in with 11 points apiece. Clent Stewart finished with 10 points as all five Wildcat starters reached double figures.
"Here's the deal: you want to play Missouri on the road you better not turn the basketball over," said Kansas State coach Frank Martin. "We turned it over. We had I think either 10 or 11 turnovers in the second half. We do that on offense and then just don't defend; we've got no chance to win."
K-State was coming off an emotional upset itself, having handed second-ranked Kansas its first loss of the season Wednesday. The Wildcats entered this game as the lone unbeaten team in conference play.
Missouri trailed 67-60 with just over eight minutes remaining, but scored six straight points. Tiller was fouled after a steal and connected on one from the charity stripe to make it a 67-66 game with 5:39 to go.
It was more than three minutes later when the Tigers finally pulled even. Demarre Carroll cleaned up a Lyons miss and hit the putback with 2:31 left, knotting it at 72-72.
On the other end, Young's errant jumper was pulled down by Matt Lawrence, who pushed ahead to Tiller for a layup, in spite of a foul on the shot, that gave Missouri its first lead of the day with just over two minutes remaining. Tiller also buried the free throw to give the Tigers a 75-72 edge.
The Wildcats cut the deficit to a point on Beasley's layup with 1:05 to play.
After a Lyons miss with less than a minute remaining, Kansas State could not capitalize as Fred Brown blew a layup. The Wildcats immediately fouled Tiller following a Missouri timeout and he proceeded to drain both free throws to regain a three-point advantage with the clock down to six seconds.
Walker had an opportunity to tie at the buzzer, but his shot from beyond the arc did not fall.
Kansas State was in control of the first half. The Wildcats broke open a five- point game with a 15-5 flurry, as Young knocked down a layup for a 38-23 cushion at the 5:33 mark.
The Wildcats closed the half on Sutton's slam with 15 seconds on the clock, sending Kansas State to the locker room on top 44-34.
Out of the break, Missouri went to work, chipping away at the K-State lead with a 13-4 run. Keon Lawrence capped the burst by nailing a jumper and the Tigers trailed 60-55 with 11:11 remaining.
