NCAA Game Summary - Baylor at Texas

Final Score: Baylor 72 - Texas 80

Austin, TX (Sports Network) - A.J. Abrams scored 20 points and Damion James added 17 with eight rebounds, as 10th-ranked Texas rallied from a halftime deficit to earn an 80-72 victory over No. 25 Baylor at the Erwin Center.

Connor Atchley contributed 14 points with seven rebounds and Gary Johnson added 12 points for the Longhorns (17-4, 4-2 Big 12), who bounced back from a 17-point loss at Texas A&M on Wednesday to win for the fourth time in their last five games.

"Defensively we just stayed with it," said Texas head coach Rick Barnes. "We didn't play perfect, but we did some good things. Overall, I thought the effort was there and I thought it was a great team-win for us."

Kevin Rogers scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Baylor (16-4, 4-2), which has dropped two straight since beating A&M in five overtimes on January 23.

"With this conference, you have to bring your 'A' game every night," Rogers stated. "I think in our past two games we haven't played well. We just have to get back in the gym and tweak some things and get that bite and hunger back that we had before these two losses. We just have to fine tune some things and we should be fine."

The Bears led by as many as 14 in the first half and held a 38-34 edge at the break, but the Longhorns scored seven of the first nine points of the second half. A three-pointer by Atchley gave Texas a 41-40 lead just three minutes into the stanza.

After Tweety Carter connected on a three-pointer to put Baylor back in front, D.J. Augustin followed with a shot from beyond the arc on Texas' next trip and the Longhorns never trailed again.

Baylor did, however, tie it on a few occasions, the last time at 55-55 on a jumper by Rogers with just over 10 minutes to play.

Abrams then drilled a three-pointer to put the Longhorns in front to stay. The Bears pulled within one on a layup by Mamadou Diene with seven minutes left, but James got free for a dunk and later added a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 64-59 with 6:02 remaining.

Diene knocked down two from the stripe a minute later, but Atchley followed with a three-pointer and James hit a jumper after a Baylor turnover to give the Longhorns a 69-61 advantage with just under 4 1/2 minutes left.

Baylor managed to pull within four twice in the last few minutes, the last time at 72-68 on a Curtis Jerrells tip-in, but Atchley countered with a dunk and Carter missed a jumper before Justin Mason's layup with just over a minute to play gave Texas a 76-68 cushion.

Jerrells scored 12 points, dished out six assists and grabbed five rebounds for Baylor, which has lost 21 straight to Texas.

"They did a good job winning the game, and I don't think we gave it to them," said Baylor head coach Scott Drew. "They did a good job contesting our shots in the second half and I thought they did a better job pressuring our shots as well."

The Bears took control early as back-to-back three-pointers by Jerrells and Aaron Bruce gave them an 11-7 lead. Baylor remained in front and led by as many as 14, grabbing a 31-17 advantage on a Jerrells three with just over eight minutes to play in the half.

Texas stormed back with the next eight points and continued to chip away before ending the half down just 38-34.
