East Lansing, MI (Sports Network) - Drew Neitzel and Kalin Lucas each scored 18 points, leading 10th-ranked Michigan State to a 77-62 victory over Michigan in the only scheduled meeting between the state rivals this season.
Neitzel contributed seven rebounds and seven assists for the Spartans (18-2, 6-1 Big Ten), who have won four straight overall and beat Michigan for the 10th consecutive time at the Breslin Center. Raymar Morgan added 13 points in the victory.
Michigan State improved to 12-0 at home this season and has won 16 consecutive games in East Lansing. The Spartans also matched the best 20-game start in school history, previously set during the 2000-01 season.
"It was a program win from the preparation standpoint," Spartans coach Tom Izzo said. "Our team was very tired after we got back so late from Northwestern (Thursday night). We kind of handled it like an NCAA Tournament where we went 20 minutes at a time on film and talk-through. They did a great job."
Manny Harris and Anthony Wright scored 11 points apiece for Michigan (5-15, 1-7), which has lost four straight and nine of its last 10.
Michigan State scored the game's first eight points and led 11-2 after a three-pointer by Durrell Summers, but Michigan got untracked and responded with 12 straight points. All came on three-pointers, the last two by Wright, for a 14-11 edge.
The Wolverines led by five moments later, but the Spartans scored 12 in a row to take command. Neitzel accounted for the first five and Lucas the last five, giving Michigan State a 26-19 lead with 4 1/2 minutes to play in the half.
Lucas and Neitzel combined for six straight points a few moments later to extend the Spartan cushion to 35-22, but the Wolverines scored the last five to head to the locker room down by eight.
Neitzel scored 15 first-half points and Lucas added nine for Michigan State, while Wright's six points led Michigan.
The Spartans opened the second half with a 10-1 run, highlighted by a Neitzel three-pointer and finished by a Morgan layup, to build a 45-28 lead.
Michigan managed to pull as close as 10, at 49-39, on a dunk by Zach Gibson with 12 1/2 minutes remaining, but the Spartans again pulled away. A trey by Chris Allen five minutes later gave Michigan State a 63-44 advantage and the Spartans went on to lead by as many as 21.
