Cullowhee, NC (Sports Network) - Negus McKenna scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Western Carolina Catamounts to a 72-60 win over the Elon Phoenix in Southern Conference play at the Ramsey Center.
Brandon Giles also added 20 points for the Catamounts (6-12, 2-6 SoCon), while Jake Robinson chipped in with 15 points.
Elon (7-12, 5-6) was paced by Ola Atoyebi, who scored 23 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the floor. Montell Watson and Brett James also got involved, scoring 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Both teams shot the ball well in the first half, fighting their way to a 31-31 tie at the break. Elon shot 52 percent from the field, while WCU knocked down 6-of-12 three-pointers in the frame.
The Catamounts took control in the second stanza, shooting 63.6 percent from the floor en route to the 12-point win.
WCU essentially won the game from the perimeter, where they outscored the Phoenix, 36-18 from beyond the arc.
