NCAA Game Summary - Villanova at Rutgers

Final Score: Villanova 68 - Rutgers 80

Piscataway, NJ (Sports Network) - Mike Coburn and Anthony Farmer scored 23 points apiece to lead Rutgers in an upset of 18th-ranked Villanova, 80-68, at Louis Brown Athletic Center.

Corey Chandler chipped in with 14 points and six rebounds for the Scarlet Knights (9-11, 1-6 Big East), who snapped a six-game losing streak and won for the first time since a 73-67 win over Manhattan on December 29.

Malcolm Grant had 23 points for Villanova (13-4, 3-3), which has dropped three of its last six contests after starting 10-1. Scottie Reynolds added 16 points.

The Scarlet Knights held an eight-point lead until Chandler hit a layup and a free throw to ignite a 9-0 run with just over seven minutes gone in the second half. The surge gave the Scarlet Knights a 56-39 advantage.

A Coburn three-pointer with 4 1/2 minutes to play opened up Rutgers' biggest lead of the game, 64-45.

A Chandler steal, and the ensuing free throw, with 54.9 seconds left thwarted a 19-9 'Nova run and squashed any hopes the Wildcats had of a comeback.

A J.R. Inman three-pointer from the left wing with just under five minutes elapsed in the first half capped a 16-2 Rutgers run to begin the game.

However, the Wildcats pulled it to 19-14 with a 12-3 run of their own. Grant began the surge with a three-pointer and Corey Stokes capped it on a trey with 10:45 left.

The schools exchanged baskets for the next eight minutes until a Stokes three- ball brought Villanova within two, 30-28, with 2:51 to go until the break.

About 20 seconds later, a Hamady Ndiaye dunk sparked a 7-1 Scarlet Knights run that gave Rutgers a 37-29 lead with just under 1 1/2 minutes before halftime.

Each team would record one more three-pointer before intermission, and Rutgers held a 40-32 advantage going into its locker room.
