Bloomington, IN (Sports Network) - Freshman sensation Eric Gordon scored 25 points as ninth-ranked Indiana used a huge run late in the second half to pull away from a pesky Penn State team, 81-65, at Assembly Hall.
D.J. White scored 22 points for Indiana (16-1, 5-0 Big Ten), which remained perfect in Big Ten play and ran its winning streak to 12. Armon Bassett made 5-of-6 three-pointers on the way to a 17-point afternoon, and Jamarcus Ellis added 12 points and eight assists to aid the winning effort.
Talor Battle led the Nittany Lions with 20 points in the loss. Jamelle Cornley pitched in 19 points and seven rebounds as Penn State (10-7, 2-3) lost for the third straight game after reeling off seven consecutive wins.
After a back-and-forth first half that saw both teams light up the scoreboard from three-point range, the duel continued in the second half, as the lead was traded throughout the first 10 minutes. But with the score tied at 54, White scored nine points as part of an 11-2 run that gave the Hoosiers a 65-56 lead with 6:44 remaining.
"It was a stretch where we needed to pick it up," White said. "We came out of a timeout and it was a tie game and we needed somebody to step up. The guards, Jamarcus (Ellis), Eric (Gordon), Armon (Bassett), did a good job of finding me in open spots. That is what good guards do and I think we have good guards and they just find me at the right time."
Bassett's three-pointer with 5:01 to go gave Indiana a 70-58 cushion and the Hoosiers continued to widen the gap, as they outscored Penn State 27-11 over the game's final 11 minutes and led by as many as 21 points.
Indiana looked to have a hard time shaking Penn State early. After spotting the Nittany Lions an early 6-2 lead, the Hoosiers struck right back with a 12-1 run sparked by a pair of three-pointers by Gordon to take a 14-7 lead just over five minutes in.
But Penn State responded in kind, making 6-of-8 from three-point range in the first half to reel in the lead before Stanley Pringle scored six straight points to give the Nittany Lions a 25-22 edge with 5:19 remaining in the half. On Indiana's very next possession, Bassett tied the game with a three-pointer of his own.
"Armon, he has been through these wars even though he is just a sophomore," Indiana head coach Kelvin Sampson said. "He's played a lot of minutes and been in a lot of situations for us. There is a comfort level with me with Armon from last year. But I also knew we could attack that zone a lot better than we did in the first half and Armon is a tremendous three-point shooter."
The teams traded the lead back-and-forth throughout the final minutes of the half, as Lance Stemler's three with 34 seconds left gave the Hoosiers a five- point lead. Battle cut into the lead with a layup, and the Nittany Lions trailed 37-34 at halftime.
"You could tell in the first half they were hitting big shots, especially from the three," Sampson said. "We were not attacking the zone very intelligently. But once we got to halftime I thought we were good."
