Pullman, WA (Sports Network) - Derrick Low scored a game-high 27 points, and Kyle Weaver added 16, including the decisive layup with a minute to play as eighth-ranked Washington State held off Oregon, 69-60, in a spirited battle at Friel Court.
Aron Baynes chipped in 11 points and grabbed seven boards for the Cougars (16-1, 4-1 Pac-10), who snapped a 13-game skid against the Ducks. Washington State's last win in the series had come February 15, 2001.
Maarty Leunen poured in 20 points and pulled down 13 rebounds for Oregon (12-6, 3-3 Pac-10), which entered the game after falling to Washington, 78-70, Thursday, snapping its three-game conference winning streak. Malik Hairston chipped in 14 points and seven boards before fouling out late in the contest, while Tajuan Porter added 11 points off the bench.
Trailing by four at the break, Washington State appeared revived in the second half and briefly pulled in front, 42-41, on a Weaver bucket at 14:59. The game, though, moved into a back-and-forth battle at that point and was tied, 51-51, on a Low jumper at the 4:01 mark.
The Cougars couldn't ride the momentum though, as Low faltered on the line before Taylor Rochestie and Daven Harmeling each missed from long range. A pair of Hairston free throws then put the Ducks back in front with 2:08 remaining, and Low could only pull Washington State within one when he made one his two shots from the stripe.
That left the final minute, and with 55.4 showing, Weaver drove through the lane and put one in off the glass, giving the Cougars a 60-59 edge. Hairston then missed a jumper with 48 seconds left and fouled out when he bumped Rochestie on a rebound attempt.
The junior point guard came up big when he made both free throws, giving Washington State some breathing room with 42.5 seconds left. Bryce Taylor sealed Oregon's fate on the next possession when he couldn't get a layup to fall, and the Cougars put the game away at the line.
Oregon looked strong early on and carried a 34-30 edge into the locker room at intermission.
