Storrs, CT (Sports Network) - A.J. Price had a game-high 17 points and added eight assists as Connecticut led from start to finish in an 89-73 victory over 13th-ranked Marquette at Gampel Pavilion.
Price finished 4-of-8 shooting, including 2-of-3 from three-point range and made 7-of-8 from the free throw line for the Huskies (12-5, 3-3 Big East), who rebounded after dropping a 77-65 home decision to Providence on Thursday night. UConn snapped a brief two-game losing skid.
Hasheem Thabeet had a solid game, chipping in with 15 points, seven rebounds and six blocks, while Jeff Adrien and Craig Austrie donated 15 points apiece in the win.
"They had their back against the wall," Connecticut head coach Jim Calhoun said. "Over the years, a lot of teams who have had their back against the wall in this league have certainly responded. And I think these kids really responded. I was really happy."
Lazar Hayward had a team-high 14 points before fouling out for Marquette (13-4, 3-3), which has lost two straight and three of its last five. Wesley Matthews added 13 points, while Dominic James, who was playing with a sore wrist, finished with nine points.
The Huskies jumped on the Golden Eagles early and often, playing with the lead the entire first half. UConn quickly opened a 7-1 lead, then extended its advantage to 21-11 after Price nailed a three-pointer with 9:36 left in the stanza. The Golden Eagles went on a mini 8-4 run, clawing their way to within six at 25-19 with just under six minutes left in the half.
However, the Huskies finished off the opening half with a 14-5 spurt and took a 39-24 lead into the break. Marquette shot a woeful 27.6 percent in first 20 minutes, compared to 51.7 percent for UConn.
Things got even worse for Marquette in the second half. The Golden Eagles were unable to put a dent into their deficit and trailed by as many as 29.
"We just said we were going to get this win no matter what," Austrie said. "No matter what we had to do, we were going to get this win. We came out here and everybody put it all on the court. I just felt like everybody gave the effort that we needed to win the game."
