Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Kelvin Lewis scored 17 points to lift the Houston Cougars over the Texas-El Paso Miners, 77-72, in Conference USA action at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Lewis sank 5-of-8 shots from beyond the arc, as Houston (13-3, 2-0 CUSA) improved to 10-1 at home. Robert McKiver netted 14 points in the win, while Tafari Toney posted a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
Stefon Jackson led the charge for UTEP (11-5, 2-1) with a double-double that consisted of a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds. Marvin Kilgore turned in 17 points in the setback, while Victor Ramalho had a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards. Tavaris Watts contributed 11 points and nine rebounds and Randy Culpepper was the fifth Miner to reach double figures with 10 points.
Despite shooting just 36.1 percent from the floor in the first half, Houston was able to take a 31-29 lead to the break.
In the second stanza, the Cougars used an 18-of-22 effort at the foul line to secure the five-point victory.
Houston forced UTEP into 23 turnovers and it turned those miscues into 21 points.
