Morgantown, WV (Sports Network) - Da'Sean Butler tallied a game-high 19 points and ripped down nine rebounds, as the West Virginia Mountaineers defeated the St. John's Red Storm, 73-64, in a Big East clash in Morgantown.
Joe Alexander turned in 15 points for WVU (13-4, 3-2 BE), which improved to 9-0 at home. Darris Nichols and John Flowers each posted 10 points, while Alex Ruoff made up for a dismal 1-of-10 shooting effort from the floor by dishing out nine assists.
Larry Wright paced the Red Storm (7-9, 1-4) in defeat with 15 points. Anthony Mason Jr. contributed 14 points and five boards, as St. John's lost its third game in a row.
The teams battled back-and-forth in the opening frame, entering the break tied at 29-29. WVU hit on 4-of-11 attempts from long distance and 5-of-6 at the foul line, while St. John's shot 47.8 percent from the field.
In the second half, the Mountaineers shot 59.1 percent from the floor, as they posted the nine-point victory.
For the game, WVU connected on 8-of-19 shots from three-point range and 19- of-25 at the charity stripe.
