Hempstead, NY (Sports Network) - In Colonial Athletic Association play, Will Thomas posted a career-high 29 points, as the George Mason Patriots needed two overtime periods to defeat the Hofstra Pride, 85-78, in Hempstead.
Thomas made 12-of-15 shots from the floor while grabbing nine rebounds in the Patriots' (12-5, 4-2 CAA) victory. John Vaughan added 18 points and seven boards, while Folarin Campbell used a 12-for-14 performance at the foul line to record 20 points.
Hofstra (3-12, 1-5), who has now lost seven of eight games, wasted double- double efforts from Dane Johnson and Darren Townes. Johnson grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds while netting 14 points, and Townes scored 12 points to go along with 11 boards. Antoine Agudio and Charles Jenkins each netted 19 points to pace the Pride, with Agudio also dishing out seven assists.
George Mason led by as many as nine points in the first half, but Hofstra battled back to trail just 36-34 at intermission.
The evenly matched contest went back-and-forth in the second half. The Patriots needed a three-point play from Vaughan with 1:02 left to play to tie the game at 64-64, as neither team managed a bucket the rest of regulation.
Vaughan was again the hero in the first overtime, hitting a three-pointer with 4.1 seconds on the clock to force an extra frame at 72-72.
Thomas netted five points in the second overtime, and Campbell sealed George Mason's seven-point win at the free throw line.
