Charlottesville, VA (Sports Network) - Deron Washington's layup as time expired gave the Virginia Tech Hokies a thrilling 70-69 overtime win over the ACC-rival Virginia Cavaliers.
A.D. Vassallo knocked down 5-of-11 three-pointers and finished with a team-high 22 points for the Hokies (11-6, 2-1 ACC), who have won three straight and five of their last six. Washington and Jeff Allen finished with 11 points apiece.
Sean Singletary did all he could for Virginia (10-5, 0-2), registering game- highs with 34 points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Singletary was joined in double figures by Adrian Joseph, who finished with 11 points and eight boards.
The Cavaliers grabbed a 38-34 halftime lead after knocking down 6-of-11 three- pointers in the opening half. Singletary scored 23 of his 34 in the frame.
Trailing 63-61 late in regulation, Allen forced overtime by knocking down a pair of free throws after a hard foul by UVA's Mamadi Diane.
Virginia was held scoreless in the final three-and-a-half minutes of overtime. Washington eluded two defenders for the game-winning bucket, which sat on the rim for quite some time before falling in.
The win was Virginia Tech's first in Charlottesville since the 1969-70 season.
