Muncie, IN (Sports Network) - Anthony Newell notched a double-double with game highs of 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Ball State Cardinals to an 82-71 victory over the Central Michigan Chippewas in a Mid-American Conference tilt at the Worthen Arena.
Melvin Goins and Peyton Stovall each turned in 17 points for the Cardinals (2-12, 1-1 MAC), who improved to 21-12 in MAC home openers. Malik perry contributed 12 points and nine rebounds in the victory, and Brandon Lampley chipped in with 11 points.
Giordon Watson scored 12 points and dished out six assists for Central Michigan (6-8, 1-1), which had its two-game win streak snapped. Jordan Bitzer tallied 11 points, and Jeremy Allen recorded 10 points and two steals in the losing cause.
Ball State shot 50.0 percent from the floor in the first period and it held a 39-28 lead at the beak.
In the second half, the Cardinals converted 25-of-39 free-throw attempts, as they earned the 11-point victory.
Ball State outscored Central Michigan at the foul line, 33-9, and that made the difference in the game.
