Lexington, KY (Sports Network) - Ramel Bradley scored 20 points, all after halftime, and hit several clutch shots down the stretch as Kentucky handed No. 13 Vanderbilt its first loss of the season, 79-73, in double- overtime at Rupp Arena.
Patrick Patterson scored 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Kentucky (7-7, 1-0 SEC), which had dropped six of eight entering play. Joe Crawford scored 17 points for the Wildcats, who squandered a 16-point second-half lead, but pulled away in the second overtime for the win.
Shan Foster scored 17 points for Vanderbilt (16-1, 1-1) which had run out to the best start and the longest winning streak in school history. A.J. Ogilvy had 16 points, five rebounds, and five blocked shots, and Alex Gordon added 15 points for the Commodores.
The Wildcats outscored Vanderbilt 7-1 in the second overtime to pull out the win. Ogilvy made one-of-two free throws with 4:44 left to put the Commodores on top 73-72, and then Kentucky scored the last seven points of the session. A Crawford layup put the Wildcats on top with 3:33 remaining, and, after one-of- two free throws by Patterson, Bradley drained a jumper to push the Wildcats up 77-73 with 31.6 seconds left.
Crawford sealed the win with two free throws with 15 seconds left.
"This was a very good win for us against a very good team," said Wildcats head coach Billy Gillispie. "We never quit and we hit a couple key shots down the stretch. They (Vanderbilt) had their chances and missed some of their shots. We are very fortunate to get a win today."
Vanderbilt had taken its first lead of the game early in the first extra session, and led by two points late before Bradley dropped in a layup and drew the foul, converting the three-point play for a 70-69 lead with 1:42 remaining.
"I thought he did a good job down the stretch," said Crawford of Bradley's effort. "Our offense became a little stagnant and he hit some big shots to keep us in the game. He had the courage and the confidence to put us on his shoulders in overtime."
A Patterson tip-in put UK ahead three, but one-of-two free throws by Gordon made it a 72-70 game with 47 seconds left.
Darshawn McClellan was rejected twice in a row underneath the basket late in the overtime, but Ogilvy collected the loose ball and dropped it in to tie the game at 72-72 with 1.8 seconds left, forcing the second extra session.
The Commodores rallied from 16 down early in the second half, and Foster drained a long three from straightaway to pull the Commodores within 63-61 with 1:38 remaining. Bradley banked in a floater to put Kentucky up four, and one-of-two Jermaine Beal free throws made it 65-62 with 28.7 seconds left. A Bradley travel turned the ball over, and Foster sank a contested three from the wing, tying the game at 65-65 with 14.6 seconds left.
Bradley stumbled while driving the lane at the other end of the court, and called timeout with two seconds left. The Wildcats couldn't get a shot off after the timeout, though, forcing overtime.
The Wildcats, in front of a raucous home crowd, jumped out to the early advantage. Derrick Jasper drained two threes on a 10-0 stretch, the second putting Kentucky ahead 23-10 with 9:40 remaining. The Wildcats took a 32-22 lead into the break.
"The key to this game was the first 10 minutes of the game, it wasn't the last 40. A disappointing way for the game to get started," said Vanderbilt head coach Kevin Stallings.
Kentucky pushed its lead to 16 points early in the second half. An Ogilvy layup cut the deficit to 37-29, but UK answered with a 9-1 stretch, and a Bradley layup boosted the Wildcats to a 46-30 lead with 14:20 left.
The Commodores rallied, spurred by a Gordon three-pointer. Vandy outscored the Wildcats 21-9 over the next seven minutes and change, and a Foster layup pulled the Commodores within 55-51 with 7:07 to play.
