Columbia, MO (Sports Network) - Keon Lawrence led a balanced attack with 18 points as the Missouri Tigers defeated the 12th-ranked Texas Longhorns, 97-84, in the Big 12 opener for both clubs at the Mizzou Center.
Jason Horton added 16 points and Stefhon Hannah had 15 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Tigers (11-5, 1-0 Big 12), who had six players score in double figures on their way to their second straight win and sixth in eight outings.
Marshall Brown recorded 14 points, DeMarre Carroll had 12 points and seven boards and Leo Lyons registered 10 points for Missouri, which used 12- of-26 shooting from three-point range to end a nine-game slide to the Longhorns.
"I thought our whole team played well," Missouri head coach Mike Anderson said. "When you have six guys in double figures, that's pretty amazing. It wasn't just a half court game; we pushed the ball well across the court and were able to use that to our advantage."
Lawrence hit 3-of-3 from three for the Tigers, who used a 12-2 second-half run to take the lead and strong shooting from beyond the arc after that to continue to pull away.
Damion James scored 27 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead the Longhorns (13-3, 0-1), who had a two-game win streak halted and lost for the third time in five outings. A.J. Abrams added 21 points and D.J. Augustin scored 17 for Texas, which lost its conference opener for the first time in 10 years under head coach Rick Barnes.
"I'm just disappointed," said Barnes. "It's the first game of the conference season; our guys, the older guys especially, they know what it takes to compete at this level.
"We didn't guard as a group, we just absolutely didn't guard."
Trailing 42-40 after Augustin hit a pair of three throws 34 second into the second half, Mizzou went on a 12-2 run to take the lead. Hannah's layup with 1:15 elapsed in the stanza gave the Tigers the lead 44-42 and Matt Lawrence's three-pointer with nearly three minutes gone put the team ahead 52-42.
Later, after Texas drew within 55-49, the Tigers ripped off eight of 10 points to forge ahead by 12 points. Hannah drained a three-pointer with 13:13 left to cap the surge for a 63-51 advantage.
Carroll later drained a three-pointer with 5:34 left to give the Tigers their largest lead of the game, 78-63, and Texas didn't threaten the rest of the way.
