Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Jerel McNeal scored 18 points, and No. 15 Marquette stomped Notre Dame, 92-66, for the worst blowout in the history of the rivalry.
The two schools have been playing each other for 88 years, but never has one beaten the other as badly as the Golden Eagles handled the Fighing Irish on Saturday.
Lazar Hayward scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Marquette (13-2, 3-1 Big East), which has rebounded from a January 6 loss at West Virginia with two straight wins. Dominic James scored 16 points and had seven assists, and Wesley Matthews added 15 points for the Golden Eagles.
Luke Harangody poured in 29 points and raked in 14 rebounds for Notre Dame (12-3, 2-1), which saw its 10-game winning streak come to an end. Rob Kurz added 11 points for the Fighting Irish, who were badly overmatched in their first true road game of the season.
Marquette blew the Irish off the court in the second half. Notre Dame pulled to within five points when a Kurz three made it 46-41 early in the period, but the Golden Eagles responded with a 20-5 run that sent the Irish down for the count. David Cubillan drained two three-pointers on the run, and a Matthews basket put Marquette ahead 66-46 with just under 11 minutes remaining.
The Golden Eagles kept pouring it on, pushing their lead to 30 points late in regulation. The Irish had pulled to within 15 points, but an 18-3 Marquette run sealed the laugher. James capped the stretch with a three-point play, and his free throw put Marquette ahead 84-54 with 4:31 left.
The Golden Eagles ran out to the early lead, opening the game with a 15-6 run. Notre Dame's 13-5 run cut the deficit to four points, as a Kyle McAlarney three pulled the Irish within 28-24 with just over six minutes left.
