Blacksburg, VA (Sports Network) - Jeff Allen drilled a foul shot with 12 seconds remaining to give the Virginia Tech Hokies a 67-66 win over the Maryland Terrapins in an ACC showdown at the Cassell Coliseum.
Allan led the way for the Hokies (10-6, 1-1 ACC) scoring a game-high 17 points. A.D. Vassallo and Malcolm Delaney also got involved scoring 16 and 13 points, respectively.
Maryland (10-7, 0-2) was paced by James Gist, who scored 16 points on just 6- of-15 shooting from the floor. Bambale Osby added 14 points and 12 rebounds in the loss, while Adrian Bowie and Greivis Vasquez chipped in with 12 and 10 points.
The Terrapins shot 40 percent from the field in the first half to take a 33-27 lead at the break.
The Hokies fought back in the second stanza, converting 18-of-24 free-throw attempts to seal the one-point victory.
Virginia Tech took advantage of every opportunity, turning 17 Maryland turnovers into 11 points.
