NCAA Game Summary - Connecticut at Georgetown

Final Score: Connecticut 69 - Georgetown 72

Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Roy Hibbert snapped a tie with an unlikely three-pointer in the closing seconds, giving seventh-ranked Georgetown a hard- fought 72-69 victory over Connecticut at the Verizon Center.

The Hoyas battled back from a six-point deficit late to tie it at 69-69 and Doug Wiggins missed a corner jumper for UConn with 38 seconds to play, giving Georgetown possession.

Following a timeout, the Hoyas worked the ball around the perimeter and could not find a good shot. Hibbert was left uncovered at the top of the key and the 7-foot-2 center stepped back and drilled a shot from beyond the arc with four seconds remaining. It was Hibbert's second three-pointer in as many attempts this season.

"The clock was running down, but he knows he can make that shot," Hoyas coach John Thompson III said. "That's not a fluke, that's not a shocker, that's not a once-in-a-lifetime thing that Roy makes that shot. If you leave him open he has shown every day in practice and this year that he can make that shot."

Jerome Dyson tried to corral the ensuing inbounds pass on the run and failed to handle it cleanly, allowing the final seconds to tick away.

Hibbert finished with 20 points and eight rebounds for Georgetown (13-1, 3-0 Big East), which has won five in a row since its lone loss of the season at Memphis on December 22. The Hoyas will next play at Pittsburgh on Monday.

"I put it up and I felt confident about it and it went in," Hibbert said. "At first, I was trying to get a shot for Jon (Wallace), but they backed down a bit and we only had a few seconds left on the clock. It's a great feeling and we try to improve each game and that's what helped us today."

Connecticut (11-4, 2-2) has lost two of its last three and played Saturday without head coach Jim Calhoun because of an intestinal problem. Assistant George Blaney guided the Huskies and almost produced the upset.

Jeff Adrien scored 18 points and A.J. Price added 17 with nine assists for the Huskies, while Wiggins scored 15 -- all but two coming in the first half.

"One thing that remains clear after this game is that this is a very good young team," UConn associate head coach George Blaney said. "We shot 49 percent from the field and played well, so I hope they will take positives from this game. I don't think it will be hard to get back up for the next game, because we know we can play."

Connecticut trailed 42-38 at the intermission and stayed within five through the first seven minutes of the second half before tying it at 51 on a three-pointer by Price.

Hibbert answered with a pair of free throws at the other end and the Hoyas maintained a small lead until Donnell Beverly's layup gave UConn a 57-56 edge with 8:40 to play, the first lead for the Huskies since midway through the first half.

Adrien and Dyson then followed Georgetown missed three-pointers with baskets to extend UConn's lead to 61-56 with just over 7 1/2 minutes left. It was still a six-point Connecticut lead a few minutes later, but consecutive threes by Austin Freeman and Jessie Sapp tied it at 67 with 2 1/2 minutes to play.

Two free throws by Hasheem Thabeet put the Huskies back in front before a controversial play tied it for Georgetown. Patrick Ewing Jr. appeared to travel driving toward the hoop and threw up a shot that was called goaltending.

Ewing finished with 14 points for the Hoyas and Freeman added 13. DaJuan Summers contributed 12 in the victory.

Georgetown opened the game by scoring nine of the first 10 points, but Connecticut regrouped and tied it at 14 on a three-pointer by Wiggins 7 1/2 minutes into the contest.

Ewing answered with a three-pointer for the Hoyas, but the Huskies took a 23-22 edge with just under 9 1/2 minutes to play in the half on a jumper by Wiggins. Ewing responded with another trey on Georgetown's next trip, then added three free throws to extend the Hoya lead to 28-23 with 7:51 remaining in the half.

The Georgetown lead reached eight a few minutes later before UConn trimmed it to three on a shot from beyond the arc by Wiggins with just over five minutes left. Again, the Hoyas had an answer with six straight points to open a 40-31 advantage and they took a 42-38 lead to the break.
