Richmond, VA (Sports Network) - Jamal Shuler scored 13 points to lead the Virginia Commonwealth Rams to a 49-47 win over the Georgia State Panthers in Colonial Athletic Association action at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
Eric Maynor added nine points for VCU (10-4, 3-1 CAA), which is now 6-0 at home.
The Panthers (4-10, 1-3) were led by Leonard Mendez who scored 18 points. Trae Goldston also added 11 points, while Rashad Chase pulled down 13 rebounds in the loss.
Despite shooting just 24 percent from the floor in the first half, VCU was able to take a 24-16 lead at the break.
The Rams kept the pressure on in the second stanza, shooting 9-of-18 from the floor en route to a two-point victory.
VCU was stifling at the defensive end of the floor, holding the Panthers to just 33.3 percent shooting from the floor, including a 3-of-16 showing from three-point range.
