Spartansburg, SC (Sports Network) - In Southern Conference play, Kellen Brand paced Appalachian State with 12 points as the Mountaineers held off Wofford, 52-49 in a defensive battle at Benjamin Johnson Arena.
ASU (8-6, 3-2 SoCon) won for the third game in a row despite only Brand scoring in double-figures. Jeremy Clayton grabbed a game-high seven rebounds for the victors while chipping in six points, two blocks and two steals.
Wofford (8-6, 1-3) had won four of five contests, but couldn't get it going offensively. Shane Nichols led the Terriers with 15 points while hitting four three-pointers, and Tim Johnson added 10 points and six rebounds in the loss.
Both squads shot under 40 percent from the field in the first half, with the Mountaineers holding a 28-24 lead at halftime.
The Terriers only made nine second half field goals and Appalachian State hit 6-of-7 from the free throw line to secure the three-point win.
While they didn't light up the scoreboard, the Mountaineers held onto the ball while only committing nine turnovers in the win.
