Albany, NY (Sports Network) - Greg Nero scored 10 points and pulled down eight rebounds as the Fairfield Stags held on for a narrow 53-52 win over the Siena Saints in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference battle at the Times Union Center.
Mike Evanovich and Herbie Allen both contributed nine points for the Stags (5-9, 1-3 MAAC) as they won their second straight and the third in the last four outings.
The Saints (8-6, 3-1), losers of two of the last three, were led by Edwin Ubiles and Ryan Rossiter who 15 and 11 points, respectively.
Siena ran out to a 5-0 lead in the first half, courtesy of back-to-back baskets by Tay Fisher, the second a three-pointer. But that was the end of the good news for the Saints who trailed 30-24 at the break.
In the second half Fairfield converted only 3-of-10 from three-point range, but a desperate Siena squad was a mere 3-of-12 beyond the arc in the one-point decision.
The Saints could have easily turned the tide in their favor, if not for a 5- of-23 effort out on the perimeter and just 11-of-17 at the charity stripe on the night.
