Jacksonville, AL (Sports Network) - Joe Ross Merritt scored 15 points to lead the Samford Bulldogs to a 57-53 win over the Jacksonville State Gamecocks in an Ohio Valley Conference tilt at the Pete Mathews Coliseum.
The Bulldogs (7-7, 4-2 OVC) also received 12 points from Josh Bedwell, while Trey Montgomery added 11 points in the win.
Jonathan Toles led the way for the Gamecocks (2-12, 0-6) by scoring 17 points. Will Ginn also got involved, adding 16 points in the loss.
Samford was hot from the outside in the first half, shooting 7-of-14 from three-point range to take 23-19 lead into the break.
The Bulldogs continued to shoot well in the second stanza, hitting 52.6 percent from the floor en route to a four-point win.
Samford won the game at the foul line, outscoring the Gamecocks 10-7 at the charity stripe.
