Morgantown, WV (Sports Network) - Alex Rouff and Joe Alexander both scored 19 points as West Virginia downed No. 10 Marquette, 79-64, at WVU Coliseum.
Da'Sean Butler chipped in with 13 points for the Mountaineers (11-3, 1-1 Big East), who snapped a two-game skid. Darris Nichols finished with 12 points and five assists.
Lazar Hayward and Wesley Matthews both had 13 points for the Golden Eagles (11-2, 1-1), who lost for the first time in eight games. Jerel McNeal and Dominic James both added 10 points in the loss.
The Mountaineers entered the final frame with a one-point lead and things remained tight as the game headed toward the stretch.
West Virginia finally carved out some breathing room with the long ball. Ruoff drained a three and John Flowers followed with a jumper to give the Mountaineers a 58-50 edge with 4:50 remaining.
Hayward stemmed the tide momentarily with a three but Ruoff answered with another triple and WVU led 61-53 with 4:23 left on the clock.
The Mountaineers then put the game away by sandwiching a Matthews free throw with a pair of freebies from Joe Mazzulla and another three by Ruoff to make it 66-54 with just 2:57 left.
WVU coasted to the finish line from there.
Mazzulla's layup capped the scoring in the opening frame and gave West Virginia a slim 29-28 lead heading to the locker room.
