Kent, OH (Sports Network) - Haminn Quaintance recorded a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds in leading the Kent State Golden Flashes to a 68-63 win over the Buffalo Bulls in the Mid-American Conference opener for both programs at the MAC Center.
Al Fisher added 13 points and five assists for the Golden Flashes (11-3, 1-0 MAC) as they won for the eighth time in the last nine outings. Mike Scott and Mike McKee added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Bulls (6-7, 0-1), losers of two straight and four of the last five, were led by Andy Robinson who knocked down all 14 opportunities at the free-throw line to finish with a game-high 25 points. Rodney Pierce checked in with 12 points and six assists, followed by Calvin Betts with 10 points and seven boards.
Both teams shot less than 35 percent from the field in the first half, but thanks to 12-of-13 shooting at the free-throw line Buffalo assumed a 35-27 advantage at the break.
In the second half KSU made good on 55 percent from the floor and 16-of-23 at the charity stripe to secure the five-point win.
The Bulls, who made just 4-of-23 attempts out on the perimeter, were outscored by five (22-17) at the free-throw line on the afternoon.
