NCAA Game Summary - Georgetown at Rutgers

Final Score: Georgetown 58 - Rutgers 46

Piscataway, NJ (Sports Network) - Austin Freeman scored 13 points and Jonathan Wallace added 11, leading seventh-ranked Georgetown to a 58-46 victory over Rutgers at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.

Jessie Sapp and DaJuan Summers each contributed 10 points to help offset Roy Hibbert's effort of just six points and four rebounds. The Hoyas (11-1, 1-0 Big East), playing their Big East opener, drilled 11-of-23 shots from beyond the arc on the way to their third straight win.

JR Inman scored 11 points for Rutgers (8-7, 0-2), which has lost four of its last five. The Scarlet Knights were coming off a 68-45 loss at South Florida in their conference opener on Wednesday.

Rutgers opened a 13-8 lead just under eight minutes into the contest after a three-pointer by Inman, but Patrick Ewing Jr. followed with a three-pointer to ignite a 7-0 Georgetown run.

It remained close for the next few minutes before the Hoyas used a 10-2 run to close the half. A layup by Wallace gave Georgetown the lead for good at 19-18 and Freeman followed with a three-pointer before a Summers layup pushed the Hoya advantage to 24-18.

Hamady Ndiaye's dunk with 44 seconds to play in the half stemmed Georgetown's momentum, but Wallace drilled a three just before time expired to send the Hoyas into the locker room with a 27-20 advantage.

Georgetown never really pulled away in the second half, but Rutgers never really threatened.

The Hoyas opened a 16-point cushion on a three-pointer by Ewing just under five minutes into the second half, but the Knights answered with five straight to cut it to 41-30 with 11 1/2 minutes remaining.

Wallace, though, immediately responded with a three and Summers added another from beyond the arc for a 17-point cushion with just over 10 minutes to play.

Rutgers again drew within 11, but a three-point play by Freeman extended the Georgetown lead back to 14 and the Scarlet Knights again got only as close as 11 in the final minutes.

"Give credit to Georgetown," Rutgers head coach Fred Hill said. "They have a great team, great weapons and they are a great defensive club. We did everything we needed to do to win the game, but the ball just didn't go in."
