Richmond, VA (Sports Network) - David Gonzalvez tallied a contest-high 17 points, as the Richmond Spiders slipped past the Virginia Tech Hokies, 52-49, in non-conference play at the Robins Center.
Gonzalvez made 5-of-11 shots from the field and 3-of-5 from long range, as Richmond (7-6) won its third game in a row. Kevin Smith went a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor and he finished with 13 points, to go along with five assists and five rebounds in the victory.
Dorenzo Hudson came off the bench to lead Virginia Tech (8-6) with 14 points on the strength of 3-of-5 shooting from three-point land. Jeff Allen posted 11 points and six rebounds, as the Hokies fell to 1-4 on the road.
The Spiders closed out the first half with a 14-0 run, taking a 25-21 lead into the break.
With 26 seconds left in the game, Kevin Anderson tipped in a missed shot to give Richmond a 50-48 lead, and it would survive a game-tying three-point attempt by the Hokies' Malcolm Delaney in the closing moments of the 52-49 Spiders' victory.
Virginia Tech shot a lackluster 38.6 percent from the floor in the game and it also committed a whopping 24 turnovers.
