Austin, TX (Sports Network) - Damion James scored a career-high 29 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the 14th-ranked Texas Longhorns over the Texas Christian Horned Frogs, 67-59, at the Erwin Center.
D.J. Augustin chipped in with 20 points and three assists for Texas (12-2), which snapped a two-game losing streak. The Longhorns will try to make it two in a row when they host St. Mary's on January 5.
Henry Salter scored 19 points to lead the Horned Frogs (8-5), who have now dropped two in a row.
Kevin Langford tallied 11 points for TCU, which will play at San Diego State on January 5.
Two Keion Mitchem three-pointers plus a pair of Jason Edie free throws brought the Horned Frogs within three, 59-56, with 3:52 left.
An Augustin trey put the Longhorns up 62-56. Moments later, Justin Mason sank a three-ball to give Texas a 65-56 lead with 1:20 remaining.
Salter drained a three-pointer to bring TCU within six points, but were unable to pull any closer after being forced to foul the Longhorns.
"Im not very comfortable shooting 29 three-pointers in a game," TCU head coach Neil Dougherty said. "When you play against a defense like Texas you are almost happy when you get eight of them, regardless of where they come from. We couldve made a couple more that wouldve obviously helped our cause."
The Horned Frogs surprised the Longhorns early by playing with their highly- ranked opponent for much of the first half. TCU even took a 16-9 lead on a Langford three-pointer with 14:43 left in the half.
Texas came back and took a 22-21 lead on two straight James three-pointers. The Longhorns went into halftime up 34-32 behind James' 18 first-half points.
"I think Damion got really excited," Texas head coach Rick Barnes said. "Hes played inside for the most part and now he is comfortable being in his natural position. I asked him if he would still be able to rebound and he told me that he will be able to rebound better now."
TCU opened the second half with two straight three-pointers to take a 38-34 lead. Texas responded with a 16-2 run, which Augustin started with a pair of free throws, that left the Longhorns up 53-43 with 10:17 remaining. Augustin was responsible for nine of those points, while James accounted for the other seven.
