Amherst, MA (Sports Network) - Gary Forbes scored 19 points to lead the Massachusetts Minutemen to a 95-89 non-conference victory over the Houston Cougars.
Etienne Brower had a big second half en route to an 18-point, eight-rebound performance for the Minutemen (11-2), who ran their win streak to six games. Chris Lowe also scored 18 points, and Ricky Harris finished with 16.
All five starters reached double figures for Houston (11-2), led by Robert McKiver with 15 points. Tafari Toney added 14 points, while Dion Dowell and Lanny Smith each scored 12, and Kelvin Lewis finished with 11.
Houston jumped out to a 48-37 halftime lead after the Cougars shot 18-of-34 (52.9 percent) from the floor in the opening half.
But UMass came storming back in the second half on the strength of 17-of-32 (53.1 percent) shooting from the floor. The Minutemen sank 21-of-29 free throws in the frame, and Brower led the charge with 17 second-half points.
UMass committed only eight turnovers in the game, and the Minutemen held a 48-38 scoring advantage inside the paint.
