Providence, RI (Sports Network) - Randall Hanke recorded a double-double with game highs of 23 points and 14 rebounds as the Providence Friars defeated the Saint Peter's Peacocks, 83-78, in non-conference action at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
Jeff Xavier added 18 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for the Friars (9-3) as they won their fourth in a row. Weyinmi Efejuku and Geoff McDermott contributed 14 and 12 points, respectively.
The Peacocks (3-9), losers of seven in a row, had four players score in double figures, beginning with Paul Orta who knocked down 6-of-9 beyond the arc to come away with 18 points. Todd Sowell chipped in 17 points and 12 boards, while Wesley Jenkins and Nick Leon accounted for 12 points apiece, the latter also handing out eight assists in the setback.
Despite shooting a sizzling 61.3 percent from the field in the first half, Providence trailed by a point at the break, 45-44, as the Peacocks made good on 7-of-12 out on the perimeter and all six opportunities at the free-throw line.
The Friars continued to pound away in the paint, where they outscored the visitors on the afternoon (50-32) and survived 33.3 percent shooting from the floor in the second half to steal the five-point win.
Providence won the battle of the boards, 50-36, and also outscored Saint Peter's at the charity stripe, 14-7.
