Washington, DC (Sports Network) - DaJuan Summers scored 16 points, including five during a key second-half stretch, as fifth-ranked Georgetown pulled away late for a 61-49 victory over Fairfield at the Verizon Center.
Jonathan Wallace added 13 points for the Hoyas (5-0), who trailed early in the second half and prevailed despite a subpar effort from Roy Hibbert and an injury to Jessie Sapp.
Hibbert managed just seven points and seven rebounds, while Sapp left the game early in the first half after landing hard on the floor while trying to corral a rebound. Sapp left the court under his own power and didn't return until the start of the second half. He played less than 10 minutes and did not score.
Jonathan Han scored 17 points to lead Fairfield (2-5), which has dropped three in a row. Yorel Hawkins chipped in 11 points in defeat.
Georgetown was down 36-35 early in the second half and was clinging to a slim 45-44 lead when Summers hit a three-pointer to open some breathing room with 6 1/2 minutes to play. After a Warren Edney layup sliced it back to two points, Summers hit two free throws and Jeremiah Rivers followed with a layup to make it a six-point game with just under four minutes remaining.
The Stags pulled within four twice over the next couple of minutes, but the Hoyas hit just enough free throws down the stretch to seal it.
Georgetown finished just 9-of-22 from the stripe and also struggled from the three-point arc, making only 8-of-22 shots.
Fairfield shot 50 percent in the first half, but made only 5-of-27 shots in the second.
"In the second half, it wasn't necessarily a tactical change," said Georgetown head coach John Thompson III. "We just picked up our intensity. Chris [Wright] and Jeremiah [Rivers] both did a terrific job defensively throughout the game. They went after some long rebounds and made some great defensive plays."
Georgetown opened an 11-6 lead early in the contest, but Fairfield followed with an 11-3 run and grabbed a 17-14 edge on a three-pointer by Greg Nero with 11:40 remaining in the opening half.
It remained close until the Hoyas built a five-point edge at 27-22 on a three by Rivers with just over five minutes to play until the break, but the Stags came right back -- with Hibbert on the bench in foul trouble -- and tied it at 31-31 on a triple by Sean Grzeck with 1:19 left. The teams then traded baskets before heading to the locker rooms even at 33-33.
Fairfield was deadly from beyond the arc in the opening 20 minutes, drilling 7-of-11 from long distance. The Stags did not shoot a free throw in the first half.
"[Georgetown] found a way to beat us, and I am very encouraged with our effort," said Fairfield head coach Ed Cooley.
