GAME NOTES: Southern Conference action will take place this evening when the Elon Phoenix host the Western Carolina Catamounts at Alumni Gym.
The last time the Catamounts were in action the team fell to 8-4 in Southern Conference play with an 89-77 setback to Appalachian State. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for WCU, which is a respectable 6-5 on the road this season.
As for the Phoenix, they posted just their third league win on the year, with a 66-55 decision over Furman. The win snapped a two-game skid for Elon, which is just 2-4 at Alumni Gym this year.
The Phoenix currently hold a 40-33 edge over Western Carolina in the all-time series, but the Catamounts were victorious in the last meeting, defeating Elon, 85-83 back in January.
The Catamounts have been one of the more consistent teams offensively in the conference, producing 75.9 ppg behind a 45.6 percent shooting effort. Jake Robinson is currently pacing the team with 12.3 ppg, while Brandon Giles is contributing 11.9 ppg. Mike Williams has also been solid on the season for WCU, as the guard is helping out with 11.1 ppg. The last time the Catamounts were on the floor the team posted 77 points, but unfortunately West Carolina had no answers for Appalachian State, as the Mountaineers dropped 89 points, en route to a victory over the Catamounts. In the loss, the team shot a healthy 44.8 percent from the floor and also made 10-of-27 attempts from long range. Giles and Robinson led the way in the win with 19 points apiece, while Harouna Mutombo tallied 15 points. As for Williams, he posted 11 points and doled out four assists.
Elon has struggled at the offensive end of the court, as the Phoenix come into this game netting just 63.5 ppg, behind a lackluster 39.9 percent shooting effort. Drew Spradlin is currently leading the team with 13.0 ppg, while Adam Constantine is posting 10.8 ppg, to go along with a team-best 7.6 rpg. The last time Elon was in action the team only posted 66 points, but that was enough for the Phoenix to get past Furman. Elon shot 41.2 percent from the floor, but the team's 9-of-18 clip was a major reason for the victory. TJ Douglas led the way with a double-double of 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Spradlin added 14 points. Chris Long was also helpful, netting 11 points, to go along with six assists.
Earlier this season the Catamounts escaped with a two-point win at home against Elon. Although they are on the road this evening, look for Western Carolina to get back into the win column and complete the regular-season sweep.
