GAME NOTES: The Penn Quakers get their Ivy League schedule started tonight, as they invade Lavietes Pavilion to face the Harvard Crimson. The Quakers should be happy to see conference play start, as they went just 4-10 during their non-league slate. The team has dropped each of its past two outings, including an 80-68 loss to Saint Joseph's on Saturday. Penn now turns its attention to Ancient Eight play, where it went 8-6 a season ago. As for Harvard, it has participated in two Ivy League bouts, both coming against Dartmouth. The Crimson opened conference play with a 63-62 win over at Dartmouth before suffering a 75-66 overtime loss to the Big Green on Saturday. The setback snapped a three-game win streak, which included an upset of Boston College, and dropped the club to 9-7 overall. Harvard and Penn split a pair of meetings last season, but the Quakers still hold a commanding 126-28 lead in the head- to-head series.
Behind the trio of Tyler Bernardini, Jack Eggleston and Brennan Votel, the Quakers have been able to generate 67.3 ppg on the season. Bernardini leads the way with 14.5 ppg and he is also collecting 4.1 rpg. Eggleston adds 10.4 ppg and a team-best 5.9 rpg to the mix, while Votel contributes 10.3 ppg and 4.8 rpg. In the team's last outing, all three players reached double figures, but is still wasn't enough in a loss to Saint Joseph's. Bernardini led the charge with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Eggleston had 14 points and eight boards. Votel chipped in with 12 points for Penn, which went just 6-of-20 from long range and was outscored at the foul line, 16-6.
Harvard is shooting 45.6 percent from the field and 38.9 percent from beyond the arc for an average of 68.9 ppg this season. Jeremy Lin is one of the top players in the league and he paces the Crimson is scoring with 18.1 ppg. He also leads the team with 5.0 apg and 48 steals, to go along with 5.6 rpg. In the club's prior contest, Lin turned in 21 points, seven rebounds and four assists, but the Crimson was unable to overcome Dartmouth in overtime. Harvard shot 44.9 percent from the floor in the game, but made just 1-of-7 field goals in the extra session.
Penn is one of the better teams in the conference and it should show why with a win over a solid Harvard group tonight.
