GAME NOTES: The UL-Monroe Warhawks will try to carry over the momentum from a thrilling come-from-behind victory its last time on the hardwood to this afternoon's road clash against the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles. Malcolm Thomas buried a jumper with 1.8 seconds remaining to give the Warhawks a 60-58 win over Stephen F. Austin on Tuesday night, helping the team snap a two-game slide and even its record at 2-2. Tennessee Tech had its season-opening three- game win streak snapped on Monday in a 78-65 setback to East Tennessee State. The loss dropped the Golden Eagles to 3-1 on the season. UL-Monroe owns a 1-0 advantage in the all-time series between these two programs.
UL-Monroe held Stephen F. Austin to just 39.3 percent shooting from the floor in Tuesday's two-point win, including 7-of-18 from three-point range. The Warhawks shot 43.5 percent, and forced 17 turnovers while converting 17-of-25 chances at the charity stripe. Thomas led ULM with a career-high 18 points in addition to his late-game heroics, while Kenneth Averette tallied 14 points. Jarvis Hill leads the Warhawks in scoring so far this season, tallying a solid 15.5 ppg. He is joined in double figures by Tony Hooper and his 10.3 ppg. Also worthy of note is Thomas and his 8.5 ppg. His 5.0 rpg are good for second-best on the squad. ULM, however, is shooting a mere 35.9 percent from the field as a team in the early-going, resulting in a scoring average of just 57.0 ppg.
The Golden Eagles shot a miserable 32.8 percent from the field during Tuesday's 13-point loss, including a paltry 5-of-23 effort from beyond the arc. The cold-shooting spoiled what was an otherwise solid effort at the defensive end of the court, as Tennessee Tech held East Tennessee State to 5- of-14 from three-point range and forced 19 turnovers. Daniel Northern scored 20 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles in the losing effort, while Will Barnes added 13 points. D.J. Lindsay also hit double figures, tallying 10 points to go with seven rebounds off the bench. Northern leads the club in both scoring and rebounding so far this season, tallying 15.8 points while grabbing 7.0 boards per tilt. Barnes and Lindsey also own double-digit scoring averages, chipping in 11.3 and 11.0 ppg, respectively.
Tennessee Tech will certainly be looking to erase last week's ugly loss from its memory, and a home game against a middle-of-the-road Warhawk club should be just what the doctor ordered.
