GAME NOTES: William & Mary head coach Tony Shaver goes for the 401st win of his college career tonight as he and the Tribe entertain the Delaware Blue Hens in Colonial Athletic Association action at Kaplan Arena. On Sunday afternoon, the Tribe had no problem providing their leader with his monumental victory as they ran away from the Fairfield Stags in a 71-50 decision at home. The win was the second in the last three games for W&M which will hit the road on Saturday to challenge Old Dominion in Norfolk. As for the Blue Hens, they had their modest two-game win streak snapped on Friday when they were pummeled by Maryland in College Park, 76-46. Delaware has had some serious issues on the road so far in 2007-08, winning just once in seven tries. With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, the Blue Hens hold a 13-6 lead. The Tribe hasn't logged a win over UD since 2002, losing nine in a row, including a 77-62 decision in January of last year.
Limited to only nine field goals in the first half versus Maryland, it only got worse for the Blue Hens after the break as they recorded a mere seven baskets in an epic road loss. Although he shot just 5-of-16 from the field, Marc Egerson accounted for a team-best 17 points as the only player on the team to make it into double digits. His fellow starters combined to shoot only 7-of-32 from the floor. The 46 points were the fewest for the Hens this season, a team that is scoring 62.6 ppg at the moment. Herb Courtney is one of three players scoring in double figures for the Hens with his 13.8 ppg and is also tied with Egerson (13.3 ppg) in the rebounding department with five and a half boards per contest. However, Delaware has some serious issues keeping opponents off the glass, permitting more than 40 rpg while clearing just 28.5 rpg itself. The Blue Hens are shooting only 40.3 percent from the floor, but at least the defense has been able to hold foes to a meager 29.8 percent behind the three- point line over 11 games.
Danny Sumner came off the bench to score a game-high 13 points as the Tribe posted a 21-point win over the Fairfield Stags in non-conference play at Kaplan Arena on Sunday afternoon. Also hitting for double figures for the Tribe were Chris Darnell and Nathan Mann with 12 points apiece, and Laimis Kisielius with 10 points as coach Shaver picked up the 400th victory of his career. Setting the Tribe apart was an impressive 12-of-25 shooting effort beyond the arc, compared to 6-of-26 for Fairfield. Although he failed to score in double figures in the recent win, David Schneider remains the team's top scorer with his 12.3 ppg. Tied for the lead with 5.1 rpg and first in both assists (44) and steals (19), Schneider is far from a perfect player with just 34.7 percent shooting from the floor. Kisielius (11.0 ppg) could certainly be putting up more substantial numbers if not for a mere 55.6 percent effort at the free- throw line.
No longer the doormat of the CAA, the Tribe are on their way up this season and easily have the power to take out Delaware in this meeting.
