GAME NOTES: The Virginia Cavaliers and the Miami-Florida Hurricanes are set to do battle in an Atlantic Coast Conference clash. Virginia is 13-12 overall, but that positive, albeit barely, record is grossly overshadowed by a 3-9 mark in league action. The Cavaliers have won their last two games, however, including a 78-60 decision over NC State on Sunday. They have played nine true road games this season, and six have resulted in defeat. As for Miami, its 6-7 ACC record is far less impressive that its 19-8 record on the year. The Hurricanes dropped a 79-69 decision at Clemson on Wednesday night, halting a four-game win streak. They do enter tonight's clash with a 12-2 home mark, so confidence should not be a problem. The Hurricanes and Cavaliers have only met on eight previous occasions, and the series is currently tied at 4-4.
Virginia jumped out to a 20-point halftime lead over NC State on Sunday and cruised to victory. The Cavaliers only turned the ball over nine times in the tilt and forced the Wolfpack into 25 giveaways, the most obvious reason for the setback. Sean Singletary scored 21 points for Virginia in the win, and Calvin Baker pitched in 15 points. Overall this season, the Cavs are netting 75.9 ppg while allowing 72.4 ppg, but the positive scoring differential is not a true reflection of the team's play since the start of league action. Singletary remains one of the most explosive scorers in the ACC, as he is netting 18.9 ppg to go along with 147 assists. Mamadi Diane adds 11.9 ppg, and Adrian Joseph checks in with 11.2 ppg. Also worthy of mention is the fact that Virginia is outrebounding its opponents by 5.9 rpg.
Miami's top offensive performer is Jack McClinton, who is scoring 16.4 ppg on the strength of his 42.9 percent shooting from three-point range and 90 percent efficiency from the foul line. The only other double-digit scorer for the Hurricanes is James Dews, who is posting 10.7 ppg. Miami is scoring 75.5 ppg through 27 outings, and the club is yielding 67.7 ppg to the opposition. Miami finished with three more turnovers than assists against Clemson on Wednesday, and a 23-9 deficit in points from the foul line certainly didn't help matters. Shaky defense also contributed to the setback, as the Tigers were able to make good on 51.1 percent of their field goal attempts. McClinton had 18 points to pace the 'Canes in the setback. Eddie Rios contributed 12 points off the bench, while both Dews and Dwayne Collins finished with 11 points. Collins also pulled down 10 rebounds.
Tonight's game features a pair of exciting guards in Singletary and McClinton. Both figure to play well, and the edge goes to the home team.
