GAME NOTES: The Siena Saints will try to keep pace for the top spot in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference standings tonight, as they tussle with the Manhattan Jaspers at Draddy Gym. The Saints were upended in overtime, 83-76, on Saturday and that snapped their three-game win streak. Despite the loss, though, Siena still remains in a first place tie with Rider at 11-4 in the MAAC standings. Now at 16-9 overall, the Saints head back to the road, where they have gone an impressive 6-1 against league foes. As for Manhattan, it has won its last two contests following a lengthy eight-game losing streak. The team was most recently in play on Friday, when it post a solid 83-62 victory over Marist. With the triumph, the Jaspers improved themselves to 10-15 overall and 4-11 in conference play. Manhattan leads the all-time series with Siena, 44-28, but the Saints claimed a 69-56 victory in the first encounter last month.
The Saints have done a solid job at the offensive end of the court this season, averaging 76.7 ppg on 44.5 percent shooting from the floor and 39.6 percent from long distance. Edwin Ubiles leads the club in scoring at 15.9 ppg and he is also grabbing 4.0 rpg. Kenny Hasbrouck is next in order at 15.6 ppg and he is the team's top defender with 60 steals to his credit. Alex Franklin chips in with 13.6 ppg and he leads the squad in rebounding at 7.2 rpg. In the team's last game, Ubiles poured in a career-high 37 points, but his effort went to waste in an overtime loss to Loyola. Hasbrouck had 10 points and five boards for the Saints, who shot just 38.1 percent from the floor, including a subpar 6-of-19 effort from downtown.
The Jaspers are making good on 42.6 percent of their field goal attempts this season and that has translated into a scoring average of 69.6 ppg. Antoine Pearson leads the team in scoring at 11.8 ppg and he is dishing out 2.4 apg. Devon Austin is second in order with 10.8 ppg, although he is shooting just 39.1 percent from the floor. In the squad's prior outing, Darryl Crawford erupted for a career-best 24 points, leading the Jaspers past Marist. Crawford who is averaging just 8.4 ppg for the season, made 7-of-10 shots from the floor and 9-of-14 at the foul line. Pearson logged 15 points, and Chris Smith notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Manhattan shot 53.3 percent from the field and it held a 28-7 advantage in free-throw points.
Siena has fared well on the road this season and it should be able to continue that trend with a solid shooting performance against an inconsistent Manhattan club tonight.
