GAME NOTES: The Fairfield Stags are currently on a roll, and will look to continue their winning ways when they host the Marist Red Foxes this evening in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tussle at the Arena at Harbor Yard. The Red Foxes have struggled over the past few weeks, losing four of their last five games, including an embarrassing, 83-62 setback to Manhattan this past Friday. The recent slide has dropped the Red Foxes to just 9-6 in league play, placing them in a tie with Fairfield. As for the Stags, they are playing sensational basketball at this point in the season and are currently riding the momentum of a four-game winning streak. The last time the Stags were on the court, the team pushed its league mark to 9-6 with an impressive, 88-76 victory over Rider. Unfortunately the Stags have struggled at home this season, posting a mere 5-6 record on their home floor. Marist grabbed a slim, 19-18 edge over Fairfield in the all-time series thanks to a 77-70 victory over the Stags earlier this year.
Although the Red Foxes are 15-11 on the year the team has struggled to put forth a consistent effort offensively. Marist is shooting a strong 46.1 percent from the floor on the year, but the team is netting just 70.1 ppg. With Louie McCrsokey (12.4 ppg) still dealing with a sprained ankle, Jay Gavin is the only player netting double-figures for Marist, as the guard is posting 12.8 ppg. The last time the Red Foxes were on the floor the team was embarrassed by Manhattan, falling to the Jasper, 83-62. In the loss, Marist shot 51.0 percent from the floor, but made just 3-of-15 three-point attempts and only 7-of-13 shots from the foul line. David Devezin was the only player in double figures in the loss, as he tallied 19 points. As for Gavin, he was completely shut down, posting just one point, while missing all three of his attempts from the field.
The Stags exploded the last time they were on the court, scoring 88 points en route to a 12-point win over Rider. It was a shocking performance for Fairfield, which is only averaging a mere 65.0 ppg, while shooting 43.0 percent from the floor. In the win over the Broncs, the Stags shot a sizzling 54.0 percent from the floor and made 9-of-18 attempts from behind the arc. Marty O'Sullivan and Warren Edney each scored 18 points to lead the way for Fairfield, while Anthony Johnson posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. As for the team's leading scorer, Jonathan Han (10.8 ppg), he tallied just 10 points in the win, but also dished out seven assists. Han has also done a strong job distributing the ball this year, and is currently pacing the team with 154 assists.
At this point in the season Marist and Fairfield are going in opposite directions. The Stags are steam-rolling through their opponents, and should continue their strong run this evening against the Red Foxes.
