GAME NOTES: Mid-American Conference action will take place this afternoon, as the Ball State Cardinals will host the Toledo Rockets at Worthen Arena. It has been a rough ride for the Rockets this season, as the team is just 8-15 on the year. This past Wednesday the Rockets snapped a two-game losing skid with a thrilling, 54-52 victory over Ohio. The victory over the Bobcats pushed the team's league ledger to a mere 5-6 on the season. As for the Cardinals, they snapped a six-game losing skid with a strong, 76-67 victory over Buffalo. It was just the fourth win of the season for Ball State, which is now a meager 3-8 in MAC action. The Rockets defeated Ball State 58-54 earlier this season and now have a solid, 39-33 edge in the all-time series. However, in Muncie, Toledo has won just twice in the last 14 matchups.
Since day one of the season the Rockets have been unable to launch a strong attack offensively, and that has been the main problem for Toledo. Coming into this afternoon, the Rockets are producing just 58.6 ppg, while shooting a terrible 39.0 percent from the floor. Tyrone Kent has been the main option all year long and is netting 17.1 ppg. Kent also had a team-high 72 assists, but that goes along with his 104 turnovers, which is also a team-high. Jonathan Amos is the only other player netting double-figures for Toledo, as the forward is posting 11.9 ppg to go along with 5.3 rpg. The last time the Rockets were on the floor, the team only scored 54 points, but it was enough to slip past Ohio by a two-point margin. The Rockets only shot 36.4 percent from the floor and overcame 21 turnovers to collect the win. Kent and Jerrah Young led the way with 13 points apiece, while Amos had an all-around solid performance, posting 11 points to go along with eight rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Much like their counterpart, the Cardinals have been horrendous offensively throughout the year, and is currently producing just 57.7 ppg, while shooting a mere 39.9 percent from the floor. Anthony Newell has been one of the few bright spots on the year for BSU, as the big man is netting 17.9 ppg, while pulling down a team-best 8.1 rpg. Peyton Stovall is the only other consistent option offensively for the Cardinals and is netting 13.2 ppg to go along with 6.1 rpg. Surprisingly the last time BSU was on the floor, the team posted a shocking, 76-67 victory over Buffalo. In the win, the Cardinals shot a staggering 57.1 percent from the floor and made 24-of-33 free throw attempts. Stovall led the way with 22 points, while Brandon Lampley contributed 15 points off the bench. As for Newell, he had an outstanding performance, scoring 14 points to go along with 15 rebounds and six assists.
There has not been much to cheer about in Muncie this year, but expect the Cardinals to give their fans something to cheer about this afternoon.
