GAME NOTES: The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will try to avoid a three-game losing skid today, as they host the Miami-Florida Hurricanes in ACC play at Alexander Memorial Coliseum. After winning three straight games, the Jackets have gone on to drop three of their past four outings, including two in a row. On Thursday, the team wrapped up a three-game road trip with an 82-67 setback at Clemson. With the loss, Tech dropped under .500 overall (11-12) as well as in conference play (4-5). As for Miami, it has been idle since picking up its first ACC road win with a 74-71 triumph at Virginia Tech on February 9th. The victory put a stop to a three-game slide and improved the Hurricanes to 16-7 overall and 3-6 in league play. Miami defeated GT, 78-68, earlier this season, knotting the all-time series between the two teams at 4-4. The Hurricanes have won the last three meetings.
The Hurricanes are draining 44.0 percent of their shots from the floor and 39.2 percent from long distance for an average of 75.3 ppg this season. Jack McClinton leads the squad in scoring at 15.9 ppg and he is shooting 43.6 percent from three-point range and 91.0 percent at the foul line. James Dews is converting on 40.4 percent of his attempts from downtown and he ranks second in scoring at 10.8 ppg. In the team's last game, McClinton tallied 19 points to lead Miami in a 74-71 victory over Virginia Tech. The Hurricanes shot 45.1 percent from the field in the game and they went 7-of-16 from beyond the arc and 21-of-25 at the charity stripe.
The Jackets have done a solid job at the offensive end of the court this season, averaging 77.7 ppg behind an efficient 47.4 percent shooting from the floor. Anthony Morrow leads the squad in scoring at 14.3 ppg and he is grabbing 4.2 rpg and shooting 44.4 percent from three-point land. Lewis Clinch is the only other player on the roster averaging in double figures at the moment, with 10.7 ppg. On Thursday, Tech was outscored at the foul line by a 23-9 margin, as it suffered an 82-67 setback at Clemson. The team went just 2-of-15 from long range compared to a 7-of-16 effort by Clemson. Smith had 10 points and nine rebounds in the losing effort for the Jackets.
Georgia Tech is coming off a tough three-game road trip, but playing in front of its home crowd should give the Jackets the energy they need to get past the Hurricanes today.
