GAME NOTES: The red-hot Huskies of Northeastern will try continue their march up the ladder in the Colonial Athletic Association when they battle the Georgia State Panthers this afternoon at the GSU Sports Arena. The Huskies have overcome a mid-season slump, and are currently riding high on a five-game winning streak. The last time Northeastern was on the court the team grabbed a strong, 62-53 victory over Hofstra, pushing its league mark to a mediocre 8-6 on the year. As for the Panthers, they have lost their last four contests, including a heartbreaking, 51-48 setback to Delaware this past Wednesday. Due to the recent losing skid the Panthers are now a CAA worst 3-11 on the year. Georgia State has collected just six victories on the year, however, four of those wins have come at the GSU Sports Arena. In terms of the all-time series between the two schools on the hardwood, the Huskies have won four of the five encounters, including a thrilling, 64-62 victory over Georgia State earlier this season.
During the Huskies' five-game winning streak, the team has put forth a tremendous effort defensively, allowing no more than 60 points in any of the five contests, while holding three teams to below 50 points. This past Wednesday Hofstra felt the wrath of Northeastern's tenacious defensive, as the Huskies defeated the Pride, 62-53. In the win Northeastern limited Hofstra to just 38.9 percent shooting from the floor, which included an 0-of-8 clip from long range. Although the Huskies were victorious the team did not show the same poise at the offensive end of the floor, as the team shot a terrible 34.5 percent. Matt Janning, who is leading the squad with 16.3 ppg, posted a team- high 19 points in the win. Chaisson Allen and Eugene Spates both tallied 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds apiece, while Manny Adako chipped in 10 points. As a team, the Huskies have been a bit inconsistent offensively, netting just 64.5 ppg.
As for the Panthers, they have suffered through a terrible season and the main reason for the losing is due to the inconsistent play offensively. Georgia State is netting a mere 59.9 ppg, while shooting just 41.3 percent from the floor. Leonard Mendez is the only player netting double figures for the Panthers, as the guard is posting 16.6 ppg. The offensive struggles continued for GSU this past Wednesday, as the squad fell to Delaware, 51-48. In the loss, the Panthers shot 45.9 percent from the floor, but made just 10-of-19 free throw attempts and committed 18 turnovers. Mendez led the way with 18 points, while Rashad Chase posted a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
The Huskies are on a tremendous roll and considering how poorly Georgia State is performing, this should be an easy win for Northeastern.
