GAME NOTES: The Brown Bears will try to remain in the win column when they take on the Penn Quakers this evening in an Ivy league tilt at The Palestra. The Bears have awoke from their mid-season slumber to collect wins in four of their last five games. Brown, which is in the midst of a three-game winning streak, posted a convincing, 71-51 victory over Harvard this past Saturday. With the win, the team is now 4-2 in league play, which is second to only Cornell. As for the Quakers, they snapped a small two-game losing skid with a hard-fought, 70-65 victory over Princeton this past Tuesday. The win over the Tigers pushed the Quakers' league record to 3-2 on the year. The victory also propelled Penn's home mark to 7-6. Penn has won the last six matchups and holds a commanding, 94-18 edge in the all-time series.
The Bears have been unable to put together a string of solid offensive performances this season, and come into this game netting just 68.4 ppg, while shooting 45.7 percent from field. Mark McAndrew has been strong for the Bears in the paint, netting 16.5 ppg, while also collecting 5.0 rpg. Damon Huffman has also done well this year, as the guard is contributing 14.3 ppg, while shooting 41.3 percent from behind the arc. This past weekend the Bears had one of their better performances, defeating Harvard by a whopping 20-point margin. The team shot a sizzling 54.5 percent in the win, and also connected on 17- of-24 free throw attempts. McAndrew led the way with 14 points, while Adrian Williams added 13 points. As for Huffman, he finished just 3-of-9 from the floor posting just eight points.
The Quakers' main issue this season has been their inability to stop any opponent. Teams are currently scoring a whopping 76.4 ppg, while connecting on 45.8 percent from the floor. Fortunately the team was able to put together a solid effort this past Tuesday against Princeton, holding the Tigers to just 65 points. If not for the strong showing defensively, the Quakers would have fallen to Princeton, because the team did not do much offensively. Penn shot just 38.6 percent from the field and made only 5-of-19 three-point attempts. However, the squad was able to connect on 31-of-36 foul shots, which helped propel Penn to the win. The team's leading scorer Tyler Bernardini (13.0 ppg) missed the contest with a concussion and is questionable for tonight's game. Kevin Egee stepped up his play for Penn, netting 15 points in the win, while Aron Cohen tallied 14 points. Jack Eggleston and Remy Cofield both contributed 11 points apiece, while Brian Grandieri (12.4 ppg) chipped in nine points to go along with eight rebounds.
Even if Bernardini is active tonight, the guard is not going to be at 100- percent. However, even with their standout guard on the court, the Quakers would still likely fall to Brown.
