GAME NOTES: Illinois-Chicago comes to Calihan Hall sporting a four-game winning streak, as the Detroit Titans host the Flames in a Horizon League tilt tonight. UIC has been on a roll the past two weeks, outscoring teams by more than 12 points a game while rattling off four consecutive victories. The UIC Pavilion has played a role in the Flames' 14-10 record, as the squad has lost just one of their 12 home games with the lone hiccup being a heartbreaking 76-75 setback against Wright State in mid-January. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Detroit has managed one victory in its last 17 games, including three straight defeats. On Saturday against Cleveland State, the Titans had a game-tying three-pointer rim out with eight seconds remaining, as the squad dropped another close decision, 60-56. Those near misses have been the story for the Titans all season, as the team has lost six games by four points or less. Earlier in this campaign, the Flames took care of the Titans, 75-65 to draw closer to Detroit's nine-game head-to-head series lead.
Illinois-Chicago's Josh Mayo seems to have a bone to pick with the rest of the Horizon League, as the guard has led the Flames in scoring in 10 of their 13 league affairs. Mayo has averaged a whopping 22.3 ppg during the team's four- game winning steak, as he hit 4-of-8 from behind the arc for 18 points in the blowout of Valparaiso. Draining the three is nothing new for Mayo, as he leads the nation in three-point field goal percentage at 54.2 percent from downtown. In addition to the prolific scoring tear he's been on, Mayo also paces UIC with 89 assists. Scott VanderMeer has displayed his complete arsenal this season, as he's averaging 9.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and almost three blocks per game. Karl White Jr. and Robert Kreps are valuable pieces off the bench that are logging 9.6 and 8.1 ppg, respectively.
It was Jon Goode's three-pointer in the waning seconds that rimmed out in Detroit's four-point loss to Cleveland State. All season Goode has tried carrying the Titans with 19.4 ppg and a .432 three-point shooting percentage, but the load has been too much to bear for the guard. The team committed 22 turnovers compared to a mere seven assists. Goode netted a team-high 14 points in the setback, while Chris Hayes contributed 10 points and nine rebounds. Hayes leads the Titans on the glass with 6.3 rpg, while chipping in 10.7 ppg. Unfortunately, no other player on the roster is averaging more than seven points per game. Nemanja Jokic could be an option to step up, as he recorded 12 points in the loss to CSU.
Illinois-Chicago has just three victories on the road this season. Tonight will be number four, as the Flames should have no trouble controlling the Titans' two options on offense.
