GAME NOTES: In a Colonial Athletic Association tussle, the Old Dominion Monarchs look to keep Drexel out of the win column when they host the Dragons at the Convocation Center this evening. Drexel stopped the bleeding of a six- game losing skid on Saturday when it used a balanced offensive attack to upend Towson, 65-51. It was just the second win in the past 11 contests for Drexel, which has found difficulty filling up the bucket. Tonight begins a three-game road trip that ends at Delaware and William & Mary next week. The Monarchs, meanwhile, have exchanged wins and losses in their past six contests. On Saturday, ODU hosted George Mason and never trailed in its 72-64 victory. The conquest puts them right in the middle of the CAA pack with a trip to conference-leading VCU on Saturday. Old Dominion has rattled off three straight victories over Drexel to take an 8-5 lead in the all-time series.
Drexel finally got some offensive production from a bevy of players on Saturday in its first win in over two weeks. Three different Dragons tallied 13 points, including leading scorer Frank Elegar. Elegar has accounted for a quarter of Drexel's scoring output on the season, while logging 15.0 ppg. The .565 field goal shooter also leads the team in pulling down boards with 8.1 rpg. Tramayne Hawthorne and Scott Rodgers were the other Dragons depositing a baker's dozen against Towson, with Rodgers throwing in seven boards and three assists. Tramayne leads the squad with 81 assists to go along with 10.9 ppg. The Dragons haven't taken care of the ball as their sub-par record is a direct result of more than 16 turnovers a game.
While Gerald Lee is the only Monarch logging double figures on the year, Old Dominion is still averaging a respectable 65.6 ppg. Lee paces the squad in scoring (12.6 ppg) and rebounds (5.9 rpg) and netted 11 points in the eight- point victory over George Mason. Brandon Johnson has been instrumental in ODU's scoring success, as he's found the open man for easy baskets all season long. He's dishing out 4.5 assists per game, while chipping in 7.5 ppg. Johnson also has a knack for the ball on the defensive end, as his near three steals per game suggests. Abdi Lidonde came off the bench to lead the team with 15 points against GMU, and Frank Hassell grabbed 13 boards to improve his season average to 4.0 rpg.
Both teams are flying high off wins, but Drexel hasn't won back-to-back games since December. The Monarchs will likely keep that undesirable statistic intact.
