GAME NOTES: The Chattanooga Mocs resume their three-game road swing tonight, as they clash with the College of Charleston Cougars in Southern Conference action at Kresse Arena. The Mocs road trip got off on a low note, as they were easily defeated at Georgia Southern, 81-61, on Saturday. It was the fourth consecutive loss on the road for Chattanooga, which has gone just 2-5 in true road games this season. Losers of three of their last four games, the Mocs now stand at 15-10 overall and 10-5 in conference action. As for CofC, it is coming off one of its worst showings of the season, suffering an 81-56 defeat to league-leading Davidson on Saturday. The loss snapped a brief two-game win streak and dropped the Cougars to 11-13 overall and 6-8 in conference play. The team now heads back home, where it has gone an even 3-3 versus league foes. CofC leads the all-time series with Chattanooga, 10-9, but the Mocs picked up an 86-70 victory in the first meeting of the season.
The Mocs turned the ball over a whopping 27 times and that resulted in 28 points for Georgia Southern in a lopsided loss over the weekend. The team shot a dismal 33.3 percent from the field, including a poor 7-of-25 performance from beyond the arc. Nicchaeus Doaks guided Chattanooga in defeat with 17 points, while Stephen McDowell had 15 points and two steals. For the season, McDowell leads the Mocs in scoring (15.3 ppg) and steals (35) and he is also shooting 36.8 percent from long distance. Doaks has formed a solid tandem with McDowell, as he turns in 13.9 ppg and a team-best 6.8 rpg. As a whole, Chattanooga is averaging a hardy 77.3 ppg for the season and it is also outrebounding its foes by 6.9 rpg.
The Cougars were guilty of 18 turnovers and they shot a sub par 38.0 percent from the floor in an embarrassing performance over the weekend at Davidson. The team lost the battle on the boards, 41-33, and it was only able to generate seven turnovers itself. Tony White Jr. paced CofC in the setback with 13 points, although he also accounted for a team-high seven turnovers. For the season, White Jr. has committed a team-high 62 turnovers, but he does lead the squad in both scoring (13.5 ppg) and assists (2.9 apg). Andrew Goudelock nips at his heels with 13.1 ppg and he is the club's top three-point threat, draining 40.3 percent of his attempts. Jermaine Johnson adds 11.0 ppg and a team-best 8.8 rpg to the mix, while Dustin Scott contributes 10.3 ppg and 6.4 rpg. Overall, the Cougars are producing 71.7 ppg as a team, in addition to shooting 45.2 percent from the floor.
The Cougars have had less success than the Mocs this season, but playing in front of their home crowd should lift CofC past a Chattanooga team that has had some difficulties on the road.
