GAME NOTES: A couple of teams gunning for a third straight win hook up at Alumni Gym tonight, as the Appalachian State Mountaineers tussle with the Elon Phoenix in Southern Conference play. The Mountaineers enter the tilt fresh off a convincing victory, as they trounced Wofford, 83-55, on Monday. It was the second win in a row and the fourth in five games for ASU, which improved to 16-8 overall and 11-4 in conference action. The team now takes to the road, where it has gone a solid 7-4, including 5-2 against league foes. As for Elon, it has won back-to-back contest following a six-game slide. The team was recently in action on Monday, when it defeated the Citadel by a 65-51 score. With the triumph, the Phoenix stepped up to 9-15 overall and 7-9 in SoCon action. The all-time series between the two programs is led by ASU, 44-40, and that includes a 56-52 triumph in a meeting last month.
The Mountaineers drained 53.4 percent of their shots from the field, including 9-of-18 from downtown, as they coasted past Wofford on Monday. The team turned the ball over just five times in the contest and it also scored 22 points of 10 miscues by Wofford. Donte Minter led the charge with 24 points on 9-of-11 fields goals, and Jeremy Clayton had 12 points and seven boards in the victory. For the season, Minter tops the roster in scoring at 14.1 ppg and he is also grabbing 6.1 rpg and shooting 59.5 percent from the floor. Donald Sims contributes 12.3 ppg for ASU and he is knocking down 44.7 percent of his long- range attempts, while Kellen Brand chips in with 10.5 ppg. As a whole, the Mountaineers are making 47.6 percent of their shots from the field and 38.1 percent from long distance for an average of 72.9 ppg.
The Phoenix connected on 48.1 percent of their field goal tries and they won the battle on the boards, 38-26, in a triumph over the Citadel on Monday. The squad also outscored the Bulldogs at the foul line by a 10-3 margin. Adam Constantine led the charge with 13 points, while Brett James and T.J. Douglas had 11 points apiece. Brian Waters posted 10 points, and Ola Atoyebi turned in seven points and 10 caroms. For the season, Atoyebi not only leads the squad in rebounding (6.5 rpg), but scoring as well, averaging 13.1 ppg. James has provided a nice complement to him, as he puts forth 12.1 ppg and 5.3 rpg. Elon, overall, is scoring just 62.4 ppg and shooting 43.1 percent from the floor this season.
ASU has had success on the road this season and behind another sound shooting performance it should be able to continue its winning ways tonight.
