GAME NOTES: The South Florida Bulls will try to put an end to their lengthy losing streak and win their first game in over a month tonight, as they play host to the Syracuse Orange in a Big East event at the Sun Dome. The Bulls began league play with a convincing victory over Rutgers (68-45) on January 2nd, but the team has yet to find their way back into the win column since. On Saturday, USF's losing streak reached 10 games with a 69-61 setback at DePaul. Now at 10-14 overall and in last place in the Big East (1-10), the Bulls return back home, where they have dropped four straight games. As for Syracuse, it has been idle since suffering a heart-breaking 63-61 defeat to nationally-ranked Connecticut a week ago. The loss brought the team's three-game win streak to an end, as it slipped to 16-8 overall and 6-5 in league play. The Orange now hits the road, where it has gone 2-3 against conference foes. Syracuse owns a perfect 5-0 mark all-time versus USF and that includes an 89-77 triumph that started the Bulls' current losing streak back on January 5th.
Syracuse is outrebounding its foes by a solid 6.7 rpg, and it is also averaging a healthy 79.5 ppg on an efficient 48.9 percent shooting from the field this season. With an average of 17.9 ppg, freshman Donte Greene tops the roster in scoring for the Orange, and he is also ripping down 7.3 rpg. Fellow rookie Jonny Flynn is second in order with 15.4 ppg and he is dishing out 4.9 apg to lead the team in that department. Paul Harris adds 13.9 ppg and a team-best 8.9 rpg to the mix, while Arinze Onuaku puts forth 12.7 ppg and 8.2 rpg. In the team's last game, Flynn missed a 30-foot three-point attempt at the buzzer, as the Orange suffered a 63-61 loss to UConn. Despite the miss, Flynn had a solid outing, posting 20 points and six assists. Harris notched a double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Orange, which was held to a lackluster 37.3 percent shooting effort from the field.
The Bulls have been held to 61 points or fewer in each of their past six games and are now averaging 69.2 ppg for the season and just 61.1 ppg in conference action. Kentrell Gransberry is one of the top big men in the league and he is averaging a double-double with team highs of 16.6 ppg and a conference-best 10.9 rpg. Dominique Jones has provided a nice complement to him with 14.4 ppg and he is grabbing 4.5 rpg and shooting 39.4 percent from long distance. In the squad's prior outing, Gransberry notched a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds, but it wasn't enough for USF in a loss at DePaul. Jones posted 11 points and six boards for the Bulls, who went just 6-of-19 from long range. The team also committed 13 turnovers, while forcing DePual into just five miscues.
Syracuse has the edge talent-wise and it should be able to contain Gransberry inside, en route the victory tonight.
