GAME NOTES: Sitting atop the ACC standings, the second-ranked Duke Blue Devils put their lofty perch on the line this evening, as they welcome the Maryland Terrapins to Durham for a league affair at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils are an impressive 21-1 on the season and bring an 11-game win streak into this contest, following a 90-80 win over Boston College this past weekend. The victory improved Duke to 9-0 in ACC action, giving the team a two-game lead in the loss column. The Terrapins are three games behind the Blue Devils at 6-3 in league play. Gary Williams' team has certainly played well of late and brings a four-game win streak into this game, thanks to an 84-70 victory over NC State on Saturday. Duke holds a substantial lead in the all-time series (102-60) and is looking for the regular season sweep following a 93-84 win in College Park on January 27th.
It was a career performance for senior forward James Gist, as he erupted for 30 points in Maryland's 14-point win over NC State. Gist was 13-of-18 from the floor and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Sophomore point guard Greivis Vasquez did complete the trick, netting 13 points, while tying the school record with 15 assists. Fellow guard Eric Hayes poured in 14 points, while center Bambale Osby and forward Landon Milbourne completed a productive starting five with 11 points apiece. Vasquez is arguably the best court general in the ACC and perhaps the nation for that matter, leading the team in scoring (16.9 ppg) and steals (37) and the conference in assists (6.7 apg). Gist (16.4 ppg, 7.9 rpg) and Osby (11.6 ppg, 7.0 rpg) are a formidable pair in the paint and have combined for 105 blocks in the first 24 games. Hayes is both a scorer (10.9 ppg) and solid distributor (5.5 apg).
Duke used defensive tenacity to win games last season, but has added offensive firepower to the arsenal in 2007-08. The team is shooting a solid .482 from the floor, ranking third nationally this week in scoring at 86.0 ppg. Scoring depth is certainly apparent with five Blue Devils boasting double-digit averages. DeMarcus Nelson leads the way with 15.5 ppg, delivering on 51.3 percent of his shots. Freshman Kyle Singler follows at 13.8 ppg, while pacing the team in rebounding (6.1 rpg). Singler is the team's top frontcourt option and is followed in the scoring column by guards Gerald Henderson (13.2 ppg), Jon Scheyer (10.8 ppg) and Greg Paulus (10.5 ppg). Duke was able to extend its win streak to 11 games this past weekend thanks in large part to a terrific performance from Singler. The 6-8 youngster registered a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds and was followed closely in the scoring column by Nelson, who poured in 23 points, on 8-of-10 shooting. Duke shot .483 from the floor and forced Boston College into 21 turnovers.
Maryland pulled off a huge upset in Chapel Hill earlier this year, but will be hard-pressed to duplicate that performance in Durham. For one, the Blue Devils play tough defense and with a number of offensive options to go to, this is a team starting to peak at the right time.
