GAME NOTES: In the first of two meetings in less than a week, the Davidson Wildcats and UNC Greensboro Spartans clash in Southern Conference play at Fleming Gym tonight. These two clubs will be at it again on February 19th, only that meeting will take place at Belk Arena. The Wildcats have simply ripped through the SoCon thus far, winning all 15 of their bouts. The team is currently riding a lengthy 13-game win streak that includes an 81-56 trouncing of the College of Charleston on Saturday. The victory is the team's 25th win in a row against SoCon foes during the regular season and it improved Davidson to 17-6 overall. As for UNCG, it is headed in the opposing direction, suffering three straight defeats on the heels of a four-game win streak. The team was last in play on Sunday, when it suffered a 69-59 setback at Furman. With the loss, the Spartans dipped to 13-9 overall and 7-6 in conference play. Tonight's contest marks the 21st all-time meeting between UNCG and Davidson, with the Wildcats holding a 13-7 edge in the series.
The Wildcats dropped in 10-of-23 shots from long range and 15-of-20 at the foul line, as they raced past CofC over the weekend. The team won the battle on the boards, 41-33, and it forced 18 turnovers and committed just seven itself. Stephen Curry, as expected, led the charge with 26 points and six boards, while Jason Richards notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 assists. For the season, Curry has put together a campaign that has him pretty much a lock for the SoCon Player of the Year award, as he is averaging a healthy 25.0 ppg to lead the league. It doesn't end their either, as Curry tops the club in steals with 47 and he is also grabbing 4.8 rpg and shooting 41.9 percent from three- point range. Richards is a distant second with 12.8 ppg and he has done a sensational job in setting up Curry, dishing out a national-best 8.1 apg. As a whole, the Wildcats are turning in hardy 79.4 ppg on a solid 47.2 percent shooting from the field this season.
The Spartans shot a horrific 30.2 percent from the field, including a dismal 7- of-34 performance from beyond the arc, as they were defeated by Furman on Sunday. Kyle Hines guided the team in defeat with 15 points and eight boards, and in the process he surpassed the 2,000-point milestone for this career. Hines currently ranks second in the SoCon in scoring (18.9 ppg) and first in rebounding (9.5 rpg) and he also leads UNCG in steals with 37. Kevin Oleksiak trails Hines with 10.8 ppg and he is also handing out 3.5 apg, while Mikko Koivisto chips in with 10.4 ppg. The Spartans, as a unit, are producing 70.9 ppg and shooting 45.3 percent from the floor for the season.
The Wildcats are clearly a step ahead of every team in the SoCon and with another big night from Curry and company they should have no trouble coming out on top in this one.
