GAME NOTES: With a chance to stay near the top of the Sun Belt Conference's West Division at stake, the Denver Pioneers will host the UL-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns this afternoon at Magness Arena. Both ULL and Denver are currently tied atop the West Division with Arkansas-Little Rock. It has been a roller coaster ride for the Cajuns throughout the season, but the team does come into this game with wins in two of its last three matchups. This past Wednesday, the Cajuns pushed their league mark to 6-5 on the season with a strong, 72-62 victory over FIU. The win also boosted ULL's road ledger to 4-7 on the year. As for the Pioneers, they have also won two of their last three games, including an 80-66 victory over Troy this past Thursday. Just like ULL, the win brought the Pioneers' Sun Belt record to 6-5 on the campaign. Denver only has 10 wins on the season, but eight of those victories have come at Magness Arena. The Cajuns have dominated the all-time series against Denver, winning 14 of the 18 matchups, including a thrilling, 67-65 win over the Pioneers last year.
What has plagued the Cajuns all year is their inability to find consistency on offense. The team is only scoring 66.5 ppg, and is posting a mere 41.7 percent shooting effort from the floor. The main reason for the lack of success is the fact that ULL does not possess a go-to scorer. Elijah Millsap is the only player posting double figures on the year, but he is netting just 10.3 ppg, while also grabbing 5.6 rpg. Fortunately the Cajuns were able to find enough offense this past Thursday, as the team defeated FIU, 72-62. In the win, the Cajuns shot 47.3 percent from the floor and overcame a terrible 13-of-22 clip from the foul line. Travis Bureau led the way with 18 points, while Maurice Barksdale contributed 11 points off the bench. As for Millsap, he posted 10 points to go along with nine rebounds.
Sadly enough, the Pioneers have been much worse offensively. In fact, the team has been dreadful at times, averaging a mere 57.3 ppg, despite shooting 45.9 percent from the floor. The loss of David Kummer (11.4 ppg) has really been tough for the Pioneers, as the team is left with just one player averaging double figures. That player is Adam Tanner, as the guard is netting 10.6 ppg to go along with a team-high 59 assists. Surprisingly, the last time Denver was on the court, the team grabbed an 80-66 victory. In the 14-point win, the Pioneers shot 54.2 percent from the floor and made 10-of-22 three-point attempts. Five of the six players who dressed for the game finished with over 10 points, beginning with Joe Jackson, who posted 24 points. Nate Rohnert tallied 10 points, while Rob Lewis recorded a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Tanner contributed 12 points in the win, while Kyle Lewis chipped in 11.
The Cajuns have dominated the Pioneers over the years, but Denver is riding a wave of momentum and has been tough to beat at home.
