GAME NOTES: The Richmond Spiders will try to continue their solid play today, as they entertain the Saint Louis Billikens in an Atlantic 10 Conference affair at the Robins Center. The Spiders have played well over the last several weeks, winning two straight and eight of their past 11 outings. The team was last in action on Wednesday, when it outlasted Temple by a 64-58 score. With the win, Richmond improved to 12-9 overall and it also pulled into a tie for third place in the league standings at 5-3. As for SLU, it is coming off a near miss of a major upset, falling in the closing moments of a 70-68 setback to 13th-ranked Xavier on Thursday. The team has alternated wins and losses over the last six games for a 12-10 overall mark and a 3-5 conference ledger. The Billikens now hit the road, where they have won just once in seven tries. The all-time series between SLU and Richmond is tied at 1-1, with the home team winning both meetings.
Xavier's Derrick Brown tipped in a missed shot with 0.1 seconds remaining, sending SLU to a heart-breaking 70-68 loss on Thursday. The dramatic finish ruined an otherwise solid effort by SLU, which connected on 10-of-18 shots from beyond the arc and 16-of-20 at the foul line. Kevin Lisch drained 6-of-9 three-pointers and he finished with 25 points and five assists for the Billikens. Luke Meyer chipped in with 11 points, and Tommie Liddell had 10 points and six boards. For the season, Lisch heads the team with 14.0 ppg and 26 steals and he is also shooting 38.1 percent from three-point range. Liddell III has also been a consistent scorer with 12.0 ppg and he is also grabbing 4.2 rpg. As a whole, the Billikens take a patient approach at the offensive end of the court, netting just 58.7 ppg on a solid 44.7 percent shooting from the floor.
The Spiders overcame a sub par 38.9 percent shooting effort from the floor by converting 18-of-23 free-throw attempts and turning the ball over just six times in a 64-58 win over Temple on Wednesday. The team won the battle on the boards, 36-34, and also outscored Temple in the paint, 32-20. David Gonzalvez led the charge with 20 points and seven boards, and Dan Geriot had eight points and a team-high nine rebounds. For the season, Geriot is pulling down a team-best 5.2 rpg and he also leads the Spiders in scoring at 13.7 ppg. Gonzalvez is the team's top three-point threat, shooting at a 45.4 percent clip, and he chips in with 11.4 ppg. Overall, the Spiders are turning in 63.4 ppg on the strength of 44.3 percent shooting from the field this season.
Neither of these teams are explosive, so expect a low scoring affair today. The Spiders have played well of late and they should continue that trend against a SLU club that has been held under 40 points in two of its last three road games.
